In Paklenica there is something for every climber – be it sport climbs in any grade or multipitches on the verticals of Anića Kuk. The approach to the crags is straightforward (right beside the hiking trail) and available to anyone, kids and seniors alike. Paklenica offers exquisite climbing possibilities throughout the year – its dry winter has attracted climbers from around the globe for many years, as an excellent alternative to destinations like Spain or France.
Rafting and kayaking on the Zrmanja river (~40 km from Starigrad-Paklenica) are favourite activities for water sports lovers. Autumn and spring bring plenty of water, and the crystal-clear emerald waters of the Zrmanja are ideal for rafting at that time. In summer months, kayaking is recommended due to lower water levels — a particular favourite with kids.
Hiking through the Velebit mountains, especially Paklenica, is the only true way to get to know this region. Paklenica National Park has around 150–200 km of mountain trails of varying difficulty and length. From the Velika Paklenica canyon to the Manita peć cave, over the highest peak of Velebit — the choices are nearly endless, and all trails are clearly marked.
During the 1960s (1963–1968), Winnetou films — based on the novels of the famous German writer Karl May — were filmed near Starigrad-Paklenica. In 2009, the first Winnetou museum opened in Starigrad. Organised Winnetou tours will take you on a nostalgic journey with unforgettable moments.
